Memorial garden for Fusiliers

A new memorial garden has been built in Bury to commemorate the work of the Lancashire Fusiliers.

The town has a long history with the Fusiliers, due to the former Wellington Barracks being in the town.

The £50,000 garden was a project set up by Bury Council and the Fusilier Association. It aims to fill a gap in the area after the Fusilier Memorial in Bolton Road was relocated to London.

The new garden is next to the original entrance to Wellington Barracks. The garden has been designed to reflect the past, present and future of the Fusiliers and includes a three-metre granite obelisk, which is similar to the original Fusilier Memorial. The design will also allow for the burial of ashes of Fusilier veterans and their families.

The project was funded with the help of a grant from the Viridor Credits Environmental Company.

Colonel Mike Glover, from the Lancashire Fusiliers, said: “The relocation of the much loved Fusilier Memorial to Gallipoli Garden left a gap on Bolton Road, an important gateway into Bury. This gap will now be filled by a Memorial Garden. We are grateful for the funding from Viridor, which has helped us turn our plans for a memorial garden into reality”.

Bury Councillor Jane Lewis, executive member for leisure, tourism and culture, said: “This new garden will provide a fitting legacy to the soldiers who have served in the regiment, and provide a place of reflection for families who have lost loved ones.”
