Historic walks are being organised in the evenings in Doncaster to allow busy workers to take part.
Heritage walks have always taken place in the daytime, but Doncaster Council saw a need to provide the service outside of office hours.
Staff from the Tourist Information Centre will hold the Summer Heritage Walks on one Wednesday a month throughout the summer. The walks will leave the centre in the High Street at 6pm and cost £3 per person.
The walks will offer residents and visitors of the town a chance to see and learn about some of its most significant historic buildings such as the Mansion House. Walkers will also see the remains of the Roman wall and hear tales from Doncaster’s rich history.
Peter Davies, Mayor of Doncaster, recommends the walk after trying it out for himself. He added: “This is a good example of how we are adapting our services to fit round residents’ busy lives.
“Doncaster is an historic market town steeped in history dating back to Roman times. It has a wealth of Georgian and Regency architecture for visitors to see and a fantastic railway and racing heritage to discover.
“I have personally enjoyed one of these fascinating guided walks and I would encourage residents to get along to one over the summer months.”
Daytime walks take place on the first Friday of every month at 10.30am. Routes alternate each month between the north and south of the town centre so visitors can enjoy going more than once. These also cost £3 per person.
