Toddlers learn science in new sessions

Toddlers are enjoying science in Dundee thanks to new Toddler Sense sessions at the city’s science centre. The Saturday morning sessions are being held at the Sensation Science Centre in order to introduce science to toddlers and children up to the age of three. Children are introduced to the subject through music and equipment. Activities include climbing a snow mountain, going on safari, digging for fossils, swimming with dolphins and hunting for dinosaurs. Staff at the centre say the sessions …

Carpet tiles are rescued

Carpet tiles from a condemned council building are being rescued and brought back to life to help those in financial hardship. A new company has been formed to make use of enough carpet tiles to cover five football pitches, which were rescued from Tayside House before its demolition. The 16-storey former council building was being demolished after Dundee City Council staff moved out earlier in the year.

Pupils go head to head with eggheads

Secondary school pupils beat a team of professors during the first Dundee Science Eggheads competition. The competition, part of the Dundee Science Festival, involved teams from secondary schools pitting their wits against a team of ‘eggheads’ from Abertay and Dundee Universities and the James Hutton Institute.

Children’s football given a boost

More children are getting involved in football thanks to a new project dedicated to developing the game. The project, by Leisure and Culture Dundee and Dundee City Council, aims to help children develop their soccer skills and forge links between football clubs and their local schools. Local clubs then form new teams to take in players as they go through the training programmes.

Businesses back Dundee V&A

A group of businesses have put their weight behind plans for a V&A at Dundee. The ambitious plans will result in an international centre of design in the city, which will open in 2015 at Craig Harbour on the banks of the River Tay. Members of the DD One umbrella organisation, which consults with more than 400 businesses in the city, are backing the plans after being given a presentation by the project’s new head Philip Long.
