Carpet tiles from a condemned council building are being rescued and brought back to life to help those in financial hardship.
A new company has been formed to make use of enough carpet tiles to cover five football pitches, which were rescued from Tayside House before its demolition.
The 16-storey former council building was being demolished after Dundee City Council staff moved out earlier in the year.
The Clean Close Company, a not for profit social enterprise that works to benefit communities in Dundee, decided to set up the carpet rescue firm the Clean Carpet Company after hearing about the carpet tiles.
Alex Fyffe of the company explained: “Looking at the amount of reusable floor coverings around just now we decided to launch the Clean Carpet Company, as a carpet reuse/recycling project.
“The whole ethos of the project is to be a socially responsible enterprise committed to diverting carpet and carpet tiles from landfill.
“Every year in the UK around 500,000 tonnes of carpet waste, much of which is either new or can be reused, goes to landfill.
“The Clean Carpet Company is committed to reducing carpet waste in Dundee, with the support of local authorities, organisations, businesses and through its membership of Carpet Recycling UK.”
The company has also created more than 20 new jobs. Staff are working on reconditioning the carpet tiles to get them ready for a second life in the city.
Wonderful site. A lot of useful information here.
