Pupils go head to head with eggheads

Secondary school pupils beat a team of professors during the first Dundee Science Eggheads competition.

The competition, part of the Dundee Science Festival, involved teams from secondary schools pitting their wits against a team of ‘eggheads’ from Abertay and Dundee Universities and the James Hutton Institute.

An audience of more than 100 people watched the final of the competition, when three teams of secondary school pupils from Arbroath High, Breadalbane Academy and Menzieshill took on the professors.

Arbroath High won in the close competition with Breadalbane Academy coming a very close second.

Dundee Science Eggheads organiser Dr Alan Bruce, a senior lecturer at Abertay, said: “The competition provided an excellent opportunity for local school pupils to pit their wits against some of Tayside’s most renowned science researchers, and they provided a strong challenge for the eggheads.

“The evening was thoroughly enjoyed by participants and audience alike with the Egghead Science Professors putting up a sterling defence of their reputations as science researchers.

“The event showcased the objectives of the Dundee Science Festival, namely to demonstrate how science contributes to the culture of the city through involving science professors, school pupils and the public in what was a thoroughly enjoyable, fun evening.”

The Eggheads team consisted of Professors David Bremner and Graeme Walker (University of Abertay Dundee), Professor Lesley Torrance (James Hutton Institute), and Professors Tracey Palmer and Alan Fairlamb (University of Dundee).

The final followed several other rounds involving numerous secondary schools in the run-up to the event.
