New lease of life for historic park

A time capsule has been buried in an East London park as part of celebrations of its £1 million refurbishment.

The Altab Ali Park, in Whitechapel, was officially reopened in March after a huge regeneration project.

The work to the historic park has included new trees being planted, the creation of a raised walkway, new lighting and improved paths.

The work was a joint project between Tower Hamlets Council, English Heritage, the Greater London Authority and Transport for London.

Mayor of Tower Hamlets Lutfur Rahman, who opened the park, said: “I am pleased to unveil the new look park which local residents and visitors will benefit from greatly.

“It is a fitting tribute to Altab Ali, who was tragically murdered in 1978 and who the park is named after.

“Whitechapel Road, as part of High Street 2012, forms the key link between central London and the Olympic Park and is undergoing major regeneration work to help create a lasting legacy from the 2012 Games for Tower Hamlets.”

The Mayor of London Boris Johnson added: “Altab Ali Park has such a rich history, which reflects so many different eras of London’s past.

“Now, it is a wonderful space which will be used long into the future and is a fantastic example of the legacy we are building for neglected public space in London ahead of, and long after, the 2012 Games.”

The improvements also include a 38-metre long bench, allowing visitors to enjoy views across the park, improvements to the area around the Shaheed Minar monument and information boards detailing the park’s history.
