New garden in old pool

Residents in Hoddesdon are to get a new garden to mark the Queen’s Jubilee.

The commemorative garden is being built at the former site of the Hoddesdon open-air pool, at the Spinning Wheel in Hoddesdon’s conservation area.

The area where the pool and buildings were located is being levelled, top soiled and seeded and the existing garden area on the other side of the Spinning Wheel house is being renovated and improved.

Councillor Paul Mason, leader of Broxbourne Council, said: “The details are still being discussed and yet to be finalised by the cabinet.

“There are an unprecedented number of projects currently being undertaken at the council this year, which will include the naming of the Queen Elizabeth II playing fields at Cedars Park, grants towards street parties which residents can apply for, and the dressing of our towns with union flags.

“It’s going to be fantastic and will remain as a leisure site. Residents can go and enjoy the benefits of the garden to celebrate the Queen’s diamond jubilee.”

The house and surroundings date back 163 years. The house was built in the19th century and is Grade II listed.

Residents call the building the Spinney because it is often used as a stopping point by cyclists. The open-air pool was built during the 1920s and opened to the public in 1946.

Residents are also being encouraged to organise street parties to celebrate the Queen’s 60th year on the throne.

A spokesperson for the council said: “Street parties and fetes are a traditional part of community life; they are a simple way for residents to get to know their neighbours and to meet new people.”
