History DVD a big hit

A DVD that brought the town’s history to life has been a huge success and raised hundreds of pounds for its museum.

The DVD Hoddesdon – History and Heritage, was so popular it sold out within four weeks and more copies had to be made.

More than £537 has now been handed to the Friends of Lowewood Museum, as a result of royalties from the project.

Bookshop owner Stephen Poulter, of Books @ Hoddesdon, made the 65-minute documentary last year and launched it in October.

He said: “The sales of the DVD have been phenomenal, with the first 300 copies selling out in just four weeks, meaning we had to order in more before Christmas!

“I’d like to thank local paper The Mercury for helping publicise it, and I’m very grateful to all the people who’ve taken the trouble to come into the shop over the last couple of months, especially to tell us how much they have enjoyed watching the programme.

“It’s really rewarding to have again bought together different individuals and organisations from our local community on a project which so many people have supported and appreciated.”

He presented the cheque to David Dent, chair of the Friends of Lowewood Museum, and Sue Garside, who is one their longest-standing members.

The DVD features interviews with David and Sue and shows postcards from David’s personal collection as well as material from the local history archive at Hoddesdon Library.

David said: “My involvement with the production of the DVD gave me the opportunity to share my collection of period images of Hoddesdon with a much wider audience, as well as helping to bring the story of the town’s history to life.”
