A family from Cumbria were given a Christmas to remember when they found a winning lottery ticket under their tree.
Karen Sham and her family won £1 million in the EuroMillions Millionaire Raffle on 23rd December, but didn’t find out until Christmas Day when they checked the numbers.
44 year old Mrs Shaw was opening Christmas presents with her husband, Anthony, 43, and children Sara, 22, and Karl, 20 when she checked the ticked at 4pm.
Karen, who manages a sheltered housing scheme, admitted that she had bought one ticket for each member of her family on a whim.
She said: “We eventually all sat down around 4pm on Christmas Day to open the presents and I remembered the tickets. I had put them in an envelope under the tree. Karl was looking at numbers on his phone and suddenly said ‘You had better check it – I think it’s a winner’.
“After looking at it we all agreed the right number was there but none of us could believe it was real. It is unbelievable that we had £1 million under our tree all that time.”
Mrs Shaw said that they have already planned what they are going to do with some of the winnings: “The first thing we need to do is get the kids sorted out. It will allow them to get a property – which will give me two spare bedrooms and a lot less mess to tidy!
“Anthony and I have always wanted to go on an Alaskan cruise so we can plan that now, and of course we will also treat the rest of the family. It is financial security really.”
They bought their winning ticket at Asda in Kendal and were one of 25 lucky winners who won in EuroMillions Millionaire Raffle on 23rd December.
