The Queen visits Newmarket

After the excitement of the Royal Wedding the Queen paid a visit to Newmarket on the following Tuesday.

The crowds didn’t quite match the numbers watching the Royal wedding, but the smaller gathering was very enthusiastic about seeing Her Majesty.

After a morning spent on the gallops viewing her Derby hopeful horse Carlton House with its trainer Sir Michael Stoute, the Queen called in at the Newmarket Day Centre as it celebrated its 30th anniversary.

In a striking royal blue coat and hat, Her Majesty was presented a posy of flowers by 11-year-old Tara Ferguson.

The Queen was introduced to a number of people, including Newmarket MP Matthew Hancock and Newmarket Town Mayor Mick Jefferys.

After talking to people she signed a portrait of herself.  She then unveiled a plaque that celebrated the 30th anniversary of the day centre.

As she left the centre the Queen was handed more flowers by children from Newmarket’s St Louis Primary School before waving to crowds as she left.
