Shoppers in Newport have enjoyed a spot of ice-skating in the city centre for the first time this year thanks to a festive ice rink.
The rink was set up beside the Riverfront Theatre for three weeks in December with skating sessions for all ages and abilities. A marquee over the rink meant skating could take place whatever the weather.
Special dual-blade skates and ice scooters were on offer for younger skaters and there were also options for wheelchair users. There was room on the ice for up to 100 skaters at a time.
The environmentally friendly rink was made of synthetic panels, which are kinder to the environment. To produce real ice rinks, gallons of fuel are used for generators to freeze the ice and then keep them cool, meaning lots of carbon emissions and cost.
Cllr Mike Hamilton, Newport’s leisure and culture cabinet member, said: “We are delighted that Newport had an ice skating rink in the city centre over the festive period and are particularly proud to have an environmental rink.”
The Riverfront Café offered hot and cold drinks, mulled wine, mince pies and turkey baguettes, to help skaters get into the festive spirit.
The ice rink was part of a packed programme of seasonal fun in the city to celebrate Christmas.
The celebrations were launched on November 20 when the lights were switched on. Entertainment throughout the day included storytelling, street theatre and magic, followed by a firework display and live entertainment on a stage.
Other activities throughout the month included street theatre, junior discos and competitions.
