Garden at reopened Rose Bowl spruced up by volunteers

A group of volunteer gardeners have been sprucing up the area surrounding a popular youth centre that has only recently reopened.

After being closed for a year the Rose Bowl Youth Centre on the Marquess Estate in Canonbury reopened in April under the management of Hoxton Hall.

The garden surrounding the building had suffered badly with neglect during the time the facility was empty.

The overgrown shrubs and weeds were cleared from the site by members of Islington Gardening Club and Rose Bowl caretaker Ollie Stephens and his friends.

The group decided to act to make the area look more presentable.

“The clear up went really well,” said Mr Stephens, adding: “We want to create an area which children will take pride in maintaining.  Many of the children live in the inner-city and don’t get the chance to enjoy gardens.  I hope to give them the opportunity to take part in food growing projects at the Rose Bowl in the future.”

The Rose Bowl is now opening three days each week, with an event being planned to celebrate the reopening.

Hoxton Hall is a charity that is currently working with over 600 young people through a large performance hall located in Hackney.  It is planning to hold journalism and multi-media courses as well as other activities at the Rose Bowl.
