A Deptford park has won a national award after being transformed in a major project last year.
Margaret McMillan Park won the Urban Green Space Category in the Local Government News 2011 Street Design Awards.
The park was transformed in 2010 by Lewisham Council. New lighting, seating, plants and sculptures were installed, along with new equipment in the children’s play area. Large shrubs were removed from the entrances and the main footpath was straightened, allowing users to see more easily from one side of the park to the other.
Cllr Susan Wise, cabinet member for customer services at the council, said: “This is very good news. It’s a welcome recognition for all the hard work Lewisham Council’s put in to improving this park.”
The LGN Awards cover all UK local government authorities and have been taking place for over 20 years. The Margaret McMillan Park beat over 30 entries in the Urban Green category.
Laura Sharman, editor of Local Government News, said: “I am delighted to announce that Margaret McMillan Park has been chosen as the winner of our 2011 Street Design Awards in the Urban Green Space category.
“The judges were impressed that the project has been designed very much with the local community in mind, delivering an inclusive and accessible space.”
Lewisham Council has made improvements to a number of public spaces and streets in the area in an aim to create a more attractive walking and cycling route between Deptford and New Cross town centres.
