Warrington Economist Wins Prestigious Award

A Warrington economist who has developed a new model for hospital provisions has been awarded with a prestigious award.

Dr Steve Dunn has spent the last four years developing the ideas for an operating franchise where independent sector businesses and the NHS worked together to run Hinchingbrooke Hospital in Cambridgeshire.

The Hinchingbrooke Next Steps scheme was welcomed by the hospital as it currently has a £40 million debt. The scheme, which identified Bath’s Circle Healthcare to run the hospital, was a big winner at the Health Investor awards in London where they won the Deal of the Year award.

Dr Dunn said: “These are remarkable achievements for the NHS, which is now beginning to fully realise the benefits of adopting a more innovative approach to drive improvements for patients, the public and the taxpayer. We have been seeking out the best-placed providers to drive up quality.”

His work has transformed the east of England’s relationship between the private sector and the NHS, and he also won an award for Outstanding Contribution by an Individual.
