New event lights up the town

Giant wandering birds and illuminating projections were just some of the unusual attractions in Bury town centre during a new event entitled Light Night.

The Bury Council event aimed to paint the town in a whole new light for one evening, and was the first of its kind in the region.

The celebrations began at 5pm, when venues across the town centre opened their doors and staged a variety of events, including arts, music, performance and much more.

Buildings and public spaces were lit up in unusual ways during the evening to create a spectacular backdrop to the celebrations.

Councillor Jane Lewis, executive member for leisure, tourism and culture, said: “This is a spectacular and unique event for young and old, residents from Bury and many miles around.

“Bury Light Night boasts a huge selection of family entertainment, artistic endeavours and just good old-fashioned fun.”

A lot of the activities and entertainment were free during the event and included lantern displays, unusual characters wandering the streets, fireworks and musicians.

There was a candle-lit labyrinth to explore and a zumba street party took place at the Castle Leisure Centre. The Bury Transport Museum offered magic, music, film and shadow puppets while the Fusilier Museum asked visitors to enter a world of crime and mystery. Attractions at The Rock included a magical fire garden, live street art from Bolton painter Andy Smith and his huge brushes, and a silent disco. The shops were also open until 9pm.

A night market was opened for the evening and all stalls were lit up to show them off in the best light.
