Durham Cathedral and Castle visitor centre is finished
On June 21st the Durham Cathedral and Castle visitor centre was opened with the Durham Polyphony student choir and a photography exhibition by Andrew Heptinstall. The centre has an outdoor seating area and a ten-minute film on the history of the Castle and Cathedral. It opens on the 25th anniversary of Durham being declared a world heritage site. Success in regional disability athletics championship for Durham pupil
Three youngsters from Belmont School Community Arts College in Durham have achieved extraordinary results in a regional championship held in Gateshead International Stadium. Jonny Wilkinson, Abbey Anderson and Danny Baker all won their respective events and Jonny then went on to win gold in another event.They were presented with their medals and got to meet Paralympic Champion, Hazel Robson. European members of Parliament are quizzed by students
On the 26th of June, students of schools and colleges in Durham got a chance to ask questions of the Euro MPs that represent their region, in a Question Time style debate. The event took place in Durham Town Hall and was hosted by the BBC’s Richard Moss. 135-mile trek attempted by walkers
Twelve walkers are planning to walk from Durham to Holy Island in a journey that will cover a distance of 135 miles and will be known as the Cafod Big Walk. The trek is being undertaken to celebrate the 25th year anniversary of the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development (CAFOD). New lights for Durham Cathedral
Work is about to begin on replacing the lighting currently used in Durham Cathedral and Castle. The current lighting system was put in place during the 1960s and as a result is in need of updating. The lightening system that will replace them is designed to be more economically friendly and lower the city’s carbon footprint as well as being able to be raised or dimmed on demand.
