Economic boost with new development plans

Hundreds of jobs could come be created if plans are approved for a new supermarket and petrol station in Soham.

The plans for the ‘Northern Gateway’ in The Shade area of Soham have been announced by Harrier Developments.

The plans include a new supermarket, petrol station, recreational open space and play area. If the plans are approved they are hoping that the area will become more industrialised and lead to even more jobs being created.

A Harrier Developments spokesman said: “Soham is not served well by modern-day facilities or services and this encourages a very high proportion of out-commuting.

“The development of a modern new food store at The Shade will complement the existing convenience shops in the town centre whilst providing people with the opportunity to undertake their main food shopping within the town.

“Furthermore, the laying of infrastructure for new employment land will help existing local business and attract new businesses to the town, helping to provide more jobs locally.”

If the development is given the go ahead, the new supermarket it is expected to provide up to 200 new jobs.

Leader of East Cambs District Council, Cllr Peter Moakes, said that he was not aware of the plans but stated that they must fit with the Soham Masterplan.

He said: “Obviously we will welcome any development which provides new employment opportunities in these tough times.

“I do also believe that Soham needs more out-of-town services.

“As with all planning applications, the council will consider each one, but these plans will have to be in accord with the Soham Masterplan, which sets out how Soham needs to grow and develop in the coming years.”

If the planned development is successful, the new supermarket could open as early as start of 2013.
