Awards recognise sporting heroes

Athletes, coaches and other sporting heroes are being celebrated with glittering awards after being nominated by members of the public.

The North East Lincolnshire Sports Association Awards (NELSA) are handed out for inspiring sporting characters in the region.

The annual awards aim to recognise the hard work and talent of athletes in the area and are given out for 10 different categories.

Members of the public nominate for the Coaches Award; Junior Sports Personality of the Year Award; Most Improved Sports Person Award; Junior Disabled Sports Personality of the Year Award; Services to Sport Award; Senior Team Award; Sports Personality of the Year Award; Disabled Sports Personality of the Year Award; Junior Team Award and The Norman Melia Young Persons’ Services to Sports Award.

The winners are then announced at a ceremony in November at the Beachcomber, Cleethorpes.

North East Lincolnshire Council member Mick Burnett, portfolio holder for health, wellbeing, tourism and leisure, said: “This awards ceremony is a highlight on the local sporting calendar and is a fitting way to recognise people who will become an inspiration to our future sports men, woman and young people.

“To excel in sport takes great dedication and this can only be achieved with the support and commitment from coaches.

People contribute to the sports arena in different ways and each and every role is an important one. NELSA aims to recognise those that excel and go the extra mile, so people are asked to nominate people who they think are worthy of an accolade.”
