Olympic cash for Grimsby

The Olympics will create a sporting legacy in Grimsby thanks to a chunk of funding.

North East Lincolnshire Council has been awarded £150,000 of Olympic legacy funding to make improvements to the town’s King George V Athletics Stadium.

The money has come from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities Fund and is part of the £135 million Places People Play programme that aims to celebrate the Olympic and Paralympic Games in communities across the country.

The money will be added to £150,000 from the council to enhance and improve the stadium.

Councillor Mick Burnett, portfolio holder for health, wellbeing, tourism and leisure at the council, said: “King George V Athletics Stadium is well used by local clubs and schools and we’re hoping that these improvements will encourage many more people to get involved in sports activity.

“We are committed to improving the health and wellbeing of our residents and it is fantastic that in this Olympic year we are able to make use of this funding to improve our facilities. The changes will however provide a lasting sporting legacy for future generations.”

MP Austin Mitchell said: “I’m delighted that Sport England has given us this excellent funding to refurbish the King George V Athletics Stadium. It will make our local asset even better and encourage what we all want: sport for all to make us a better, fitter and more active community.”

Work will include a better track layout and refurbishment of the pavilion and track lighting to improve use during the winter.
