Heart unit gets go-ahead

A new heart unit should be up and running next year in Grimsby after being given the go-ahead.

The multi-million pound Cardiology Special Procedures Unit will be built at the Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital.

The Big Red Heart Appeal is being run in the town to raise cash for the specialist equipment that will be needed, while the building work is being funded by the NHS.

The appeal has already raised £71,542, but much more is needed. A gamma camera costs £160,000 and bedside monitors cost £100,000 each.

Cardiologist Dr Mark Walters, from the hospital, said: “The new lab will mean that the waiting list will be shorter and we will be able to do more angiograms to rule out coronary disease in patients with suspected angina.

“We will be able to put in pacemakers with less delay and we are looking to implanting specialist pacemakers into patients with heart failure to improve symptoms of breathlessness. At the moment patients who require this have to travel to Hull or Leeds.

“We will be scanning a lot more patients with chest pain and identifying more coronary disease at an earlier stage.”

Chairman of trustees, Ron Kitching, said: “It is very important for people to keep giving money because we need a new lab and new equipment to deal with the amount of patients.

“As it stands, patients are being prepared for procedures on the top floor then they have to travel to the bottom, have it done, and after, they have to be taken back to the top for aftercare.

“What the new unit will do is bring everything together in one place and provide new services which will reduce the risk of heart attack.”
