Sport Relief success

Fundraisers in all shapes, sizes and ages turned up to raise money for Sport Relief.

Runners could choose routes of one, three and six miles along the seafront at Cleethorpes to raise money for the appeal.

Jason Neilson, 39, of Grimsby, dressed up as Scooby Doo to run the six-mile race. He said: “I just wanted to do it in a full fancy dress. Last year I did the Humberston Fun Run as a caveman and the year before that I was a pirate.

“The costume is not too bad to run in. It’s just like running in a tracksuit top and bottoms.”

June Dales, 58, pushed her seven-and-a- half-week-old granddaughter Abbie in a pram. She said: “I’ve done Sport Relief before and I did the Race For Life last year. Hopefully we’ll do it again next year.”

Denise Portus, 48, of Grimsby took part in the one-mile event on a tandem bike with her 11-year-old autistic son Thomas.

She said: “Thomas wanted to take part, but because he’s not 16 he couldn’t do it on his own, so I’ve done it with him.

“We’ve hired the bike free of charge from the leisure centre because Thomas would have got too tired walking the mile. Sport Relief is great because everyone can take part.”

More than 70 people also took part in a two-hour exercise session at Humberston Country Club to raise money for Sport Relief.

Janine Barker, 50, of Park Avenue, Grimsby, who took part, said: “It’s been great. It was a good motivational class.

“The trainers really pushed us to work hard and we got a lot out of it. I feel tired but it was good fun. Everybody has enjoyed themselves.”
