Football coach scores well

Football coach Lucy Savage has won a top award for her commitment to the game at grassroots level.

Lucy, community sports coach for Wyre Forest District Council, has won the FA McDonald’s Community Award title for Coach of the Year for Worcestershire.She was given the prize for her dedication to getting children of all abilities to take part in the game and for encouraging girls and women to enjoy the sport.

Lucy has been working for the council for just over two years. She runs football sessions for children in schools across the district during term time and also sets up a summer programme of football sessions during the school holidays.

She said: “I’m delighted to pick up the award. I really enjoy my work and I’m especially keen to develop girls’ and women’s football in the region.“What I’m ultimately aiming for is to help youngsters build on their skills so they continue with the game and join a local club.”

Councillor Tracey Onslow, Wyre Forest District Council’s cabinet member with responsibility for community well-being, said: “Congratulations to Lucy. It’s recognition of the work Lucy does, dedicating time to developing tomorrow’s young talent.

“The Sports Development Team is committed to developing and maintaining sporting opportunities for the whole community and this award highlights just one aspect of what they do.”

It is the second year the FA Community Awards have been given out. They aim to recognise and reward individuals and clubs across the country who make a difference to grassroots football in their local community.
