Churchgoers sleep rough

Church members slept outside for a night to raise money and awareness for the homeless.

Members of the congregation of Lifechurch, in Vicarage Street, took part in the Big Sleep Out to collect food and money for the needy.

A total of 15 people took part in the event just before Christmas, to ensure that the homeless and people living below the poverty line had decent food to eat over the festive season.

Church spokeswoman Janelle Fowlow said: “The team raised over £2,000 as well as the food donations to support the Boomerang Project, Lifechurch’s community feeding initiative and our annual Christmas Hamper Appeal.

“We would like to say thank you to those who braved the cold on behalf of others who live like that regularly, and those who gave so generously.”

The fundraising event meant 40 people enjoyed a hot Christmas dinner with all of the trimmings. A total of 100 food hampers were also made up with the money raised.

Janelle added: “Each of the food hampers has gone to needy families in the borough to provide a little bit of extra joy to those who have less at this time of the year.”

It is estimated there are around 2,000 people in Nuneaton and Bedworth living below the poverty line.

Dave Jones, senior leader at the Lifechurch, said: “Our aim is to stand with them, help them as much as we can and show them that someone cares. It can make all of the difference to them.”
