Businesses lend cash to schools

Businesses have lent cash to schools so the pupils can invest it and make a profit.

The scheme, in North Lincolnshire, involves businesses lending £150 to primary and junior school children for them to use for their money-making ideas.

Eight classes are taking part in the Make £5 Blossom project. It is the second time the scheme has been run in the borough. Earlier in the year ten schools were lent money and made more than £4,000 profit.

Money-making schemes have included staging a show, growing plants, selling refreshments at school events and a secret art auction.

The businesses involved give expert advice during the project as well as lending the money. Schools get to keep their profit at the end and often the businesses donate the original £150 loan as well.

Make £5 Blossom was created by Rotherham Ready, a subsidiary of Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council, and it is co-ordinated by North Lincolnshire Council.

Cllr Liz Redfern, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “Make £5 Blossom is a wonderful scheme that encourages children to develop business skills and demonstrate their entrepreneurial flair.

“It has many benefits, not only for the children taking part but also their teachers and local businesses.”

UK Steel Enterprise Ltd (UKSE Ltd) is the main sponsor of the scheme. Keith Williams, UKSE Ltd’s Regional Manager for Yorkshire, Humberside and the Midlands, said: “We are really excited about being involved with Make £5 Blossom.

“It’s vital that we encourage enterprise and entrepreneurship in our young people and this scheme is the perfect vehicle to make that happen.

“We are looking forward to seeing the ideas that the next generation of business leaders come up with in North Lincolnshire.”
