Maria Cliffe, the owner of a children’s boutique in Stockport has claimed that her shop has been hit by Big Fat Gypsy Wedding fever.
Her young customers are favouring extravagant creations made famous by the BAFTA-winning Channel 4 programme rather than traditional holy communion and bridesmaid dresses.
Maria, 32, said that her customers want Swarovski crystal embellished frocks and lots of underskirts.
Although some of her customers are from the travelling community, other non-traveller little girls are also choosing extravagant and embellished dresses.
Maria believes that the popular Channel 4 programme is the reason that the new style of dresses has become so popular.
Maria said: “The girls just don’t want traditional dresses any more. It’s definitely because of the programme.
“They know exactly what they want. It has to be big. The bigger the better. They want lots of underskirts and lots of diamantes. They are diamante mad.
“If a little girl finds out her friend is having 10 underskirts in her communion dress, she’ll want 12.”
Maria’s dresses are ordered in and altered and embellished by dressmaker Tracy Baldock. Simple dresses can cost around £20 to £40 but the more extravagant creations can cost up to £500.
Maria said that some parents are even asking for Gypsy Wedding style Christening styles. After a number of requests, she is now planning on starting to make wedding dresses.
Maria added: “The Big Fat Gypsy Wedding-style dresses have definitely overtaken the traditional dresses in terms of popularity. I think there are going to be a few surprised dads at the communions this year!”
