Kids charity benefits from first haircut in 40 years

A volunteer has faced the chop for the first time in 40 years, all in the name of charity.

54 year old Theresa Monaghan had her dramatic haircut to raise money for the charity Jump Space. Her waist long hair was chopped off to help the disabled children’s charity after they were burgled.

She said: “I had been thinking I should get it done but never quite got there. The last time was when I was still at school.

“I was quite excited but very nervous. I was just devastated when I heard what happened to Jump Space. They desecrated something that was so wholesome.

“I really believe in what it does, some parents see their children smile for the first time there.

“The break-in finally gave me the impetus to go for the big chop.”

Jump Space was ransacked on January 11. The thieves stole £130 from the safe, some computer equipment and caused £1,000 worth of damage.

Theresa’s sons Sean, 27, and Luke, 19 have learning disabilities and use the centre.  The centre offer rebound therapy with trampolines so that to help with movement and development. She had her hair cut at Salon Four-One-Seven on Hempshaw Lane, Offerton.

Paul Lake, a former Manchester City player, is a patron for the charity and his wife Jo is a trustee. Jo said: “For us every penny counts and it is the fourth time we have been broken into in little more than a year.

“It doesn’t get much lower than stealing from a children’s charity but these people don’t care. Jump Space is very close to Theresa’s heart and we are so grateful to her. The haircut was a huge thing for her but it looks fabulous.”
