The headteacher of Swansea’s brand new school has been named.
Rhian James Collins has been appointed to be headteacher of the Ysgol Gymraeg y Cwm when it opens for the first time in September.
Rhian, who is currently a deputy headteacher in Neath, said: “I am delighted to have the very special opportunity to help develop from the start what I am sure is going to be a happy and successful school.
“I am very much looking forward to welcoming the first pupils and watching them progress as the school grows.”
The school has been built on the site of the former Cwm Primary School (Junior School building) to help cope with the urgent need for Welsh medium places.
Richard Parry corporate director (education) at Swansea Council, said: “I am delighted that our newest Welsh school now has an official name and that parents have the opportunity to apply for a place for their child in the nursery and reception classes.
“The demand for Welsh medium primary places is continuing to rise and we want to make provision to meet this demand from parents.
“The development of this new school on the Cwm site will help us meet the demand for places and also means children not having to travel out of their community to get to the nearest Welsh medium primary school.
“It will bring the number of Welsh primary schools we have in the city up to 11 and follows the very successful opening of YGG Tan-y-lan last year.”
