£1,000 raised with haircuts for charity

A charitable hairdresser has already raised nearly £1,000 cutting hair on her days off.

Alex Leagas, owner of Rags hairdressers in Bournemouth, has been opening her salon on Mondays and giving all the money that she makes to the British Disabled Waterski and Wakeboard Association.

She is on course to reach her £1,000 target in the New Year thanks to the help that she has received from her customers as many overpaid when they discovered that the money was going to charity.

45 year old Alex has a passion for water sports and works for the coaching disabled people in the sport at her local centre at Ellingham Lake, Ringwood as well as at the charity’s base, Heron Lake, at Wraysbury in Middlesex.

The charity has needed some extra fundraising support after Heron Lake was closed for weeks over the summer due to an outbreak of toxic blue green algae.

Alex said: “There is so much good going on there I had to help – and I thought I’d stick to what I know.”

She has been inspired by the people she has coached; these have included soldiers who have lost limbs, paraplegics and children with severely limited movement.

“I have learned so much from these people. Their grit and determination – to see how people progress through adversity is amazing.”
