The Hotel of the Undead

A hotel in Bournemouth has been transformed into a horror set with roaming zombies passing guests in its corridors.

The Carlton Hotel on the East Cliff is the setting for Wimborne local Kelvin Beer’s new movie Convention of the Dead.

Kelvin and his producers were initially looking in London for a hotel setting for his first feature production, but they gave up looking in the capital due to costs.

The comedy horror film’s story is based around a “geeky” sci-fi convention at a hotel that becomes infested with flesh-eating zombies.

Volunteers from the local area are appearing as extras so that the film makers can keep with the £32,000 budget.

Kelvin studied at Corfe Hills School, Bournemouth and Poole College and the Arts Institute and has been working around the clock on his first film.

He said: “Those who’ve come to help have been brilliant and it’s going very well. We’re keeping them out late but everybody is loving it. And the film looks like 10 times its budget was spent on it.”

The film has garnered interest from distributors due to the script alone and Kelvin and producer Andy Poulastides of Three-Edged Productions travelled to Cannes Film Festival to try and find people who may be interested in the film.

Philip Barton, the hotel’s manager who will be appearing in the film as a zombie, said: “They seem like such a nice bunch but I know they’re not making Snow White.”

36 year old Gary Baxter said: “I loved it when I was made up as a zombie. I’ve not been bitten by one yet. When you’re covered in blood it’s a lot easier becoming a zombie.”
