Young Entrepreneurs Win Challenge

It is a mixture of Dragons’ Den and The Apprentice in Bradford as schoolchildren battle it out in a business competition.

Over 200 teams of schoolchildren pitched their inventions and ideas in the Step Up Enterprise Market Challenge run by Bradford Council.

Judges chose 61 winning entries to take part in a final that will involve selling their items at a market and trying to make a profit.

The winning teams have three more months to develop their products and services before trading takes place on July 2 on Church Green, Keighley, and July 9 in Darley Street, Bradford.

Teams will keep all profits from the day and the best-performing stalls, in terms of innovation, marketing and profits, will share an additional prize of £3,000.

The challenge asked children aged five to 19 to come up with great business ideas. They were judged on the originality of their idea, their creativity, teamwork and presentation skills.

Ideas included a jokebook, homemade chocolate items, a team who grew their own strawberries to make jam, car accessories to promote seat-belt use for children and a Fairtrade link with a village in Kenya which produces jewellery and accessories.

Phil Hunter, Bradford Council’s lead education officer for 14-19 year olds, said: “The standard of entries this year has been amazing and there are some fantastic products and services which will now be taken to market.

“Some of these young people have overcome significant barriers to reach this stage and we are delighted to be able to fund them with up to £100 each to buy the materials they need to make their business idea a reality.”
