The Makar, Liz Lochhead, has written a new drama about the Scottish bard, Robert Burns. Lochhead’s play Burns and the Bankers is based on a short story by Helen Simpson
The play will be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on 25th January, Burns Night, and will star John Sessions, Greg Wise and Sophie Thompson.
The director of the radio play, Amber Barnfather The Stage theatrical newspaper: “It’s very exciting – this production brings together acclaimed English short story writer, Helen Simpson – best known for creating vivid inner lives for her characters and for holding contemporary concerns up to the light – and Liz Lochhead, award-winning dramatist and Scotland’s Makar.
“Liz is perfectly placed to dramatise a story that is, among other things, a witty and moving introduction to the poetry and life of the Scots poet Robert Burns.”
The original short story paralleled a modern day Burns Night celebration and Burns’ life.
Ms Lochhead was made Scotland’s national poet pr Makar in 2010, following the late Edwin Morgan.
One of the first things that she did in her new role was to open the new Robert Burns Birthplace Museum in Alloway in Ayrshire.
