A Student Union bar is the first in the county to be given a new accreditation for its good practices and quality of care for customers.
The bar, at the University of Bedfordshire in Luton, has been given the nationally recognised ‘Best Bar None’ accreditation.
Bars in Luton were invited to take part in the voluntary Home Office scheme in January. Premises are then judged on best practices, including crime prevention, safety measures, fire safety, age-related sales, noise pollution and environmental issues and drug prevention.
Many other pubs and clubs in the town are working hard to be given the accreditation.
Bedfordshire Police licensing officer PS Ruth Connelly, who is based at Luton police station and attended the award ceremony on at the Student Union bar, said: “I’m delighted that the Students’ Union and other premises have been working closely with the police, fire service and local authority to raise their standards to the best they can be. I hope this will be the first of many premises joining the scheme and the plaque will become the sign which people will recognise and associate with a safe venue when they are out enjoying themselves.”
Graham Dean, licensee of the Student Union bar, said: “As a venue we are committed to providing a safe, friendly and relaxed atmosphere for all the staff and students at the university.
“Achieving this award, during the first year at our new premises, reflects the hard work and dedication that all of the team have put into this scheme.”
