Diamond anniversary celebration for special couple

A couple who are about to celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary have put their success down to shared interests and walks together.

83 year olds Stanley and Audrey Birkett, celebrated their marriage milestone at Rigby Hall Village, Wrea Green, surrounded by 30 friends and family.

They arrived in style at the party in a white Rolls Royce that their family had booked for them.

Stanley said: “It was a big surprise.”

They were married in 1952 at St Andrew’s Church, Blackpool Road, Ashton.

Speaking of their wedding, Stanley said: “It was a long while ago, happy times.”

Taking abour their honeymoon in Southport, Audrey said: “We went to shows, the theatre and walked along the front. We had a nice time.

“We had not very much money then. We used to get these cheap day trips on the train. They all go abroad now, it’s a different day and age.”

Audrey was born in Hutton, and Stanley was born on his family’s farm in Inskip.

Audrey, was 23 when she married Stanley, said: “We don’t fall out. We both like the same things, walking, cycling.

“We do a lot of walking all along the front, St Annes, Lytham, Garstang, all along the river, Knott End. We also like music, we like reading. We dine out four times a week, just at lunchtime.”

They have two children, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Audrey said: “We have had a lovely life.”
