Midnight walk planned in aid of charity

Mum Theresa Pickering is planning a midnight walk event in July to raise money for The Space Centre.

Theresa, a hairdresser in Preston, has arranged the walk on Saturday July 14 to support The Space Centre charity, which is located in Pedders Lane, Ashton, Preston.

The Space Centre is the UK’s biggest multi-sensory environment for people with special needs.

However it now needs to expand into a larger building, which is next door, to meet the ever-growing demand for its services.

Preston hairdresser Theresa visits the centre with her daughter Maisie, who is one and who has Down’s Syndrome.

Theresa said: “The Space Centre is an absolutely fantastic place, but when you want to go you can’t always get in because it is so popular that there aren’t always places available.

“There are lots of play centres for typical children but a lot of children like Maisie can’t go to play centres like that.

“The Space Centre is for children and adults and it’s a really safe place to play.

“It’s good for support as well, because you meet other people in the same boat as you.”

Theresa, who is one of the mobile hairdressers in Preston living in Greenfield Drive, Lostock Hall, with her husband Andrew, a plumber, and the couple’s three children, is planning to lead a group on a 10.2mile walk going from Farington Moss St Paul’s Primary School to The Space Centre and then back.

She said: “We’ve already got 30 people signed up.

“We’re hoping to get as many women as possible to take part.

“I just want to try and make a big difference.”

The Space Centre purchased the Willow Child Development Centre, which is next door to its existing building, with a Future Builders Grant of £366,000 last year.

The charity fundraised £350,000 towards the cost of the centre’s renovation.

Since then it has established a brick appeal as well as other initiatives to attempt to raise the same amount again, which will help fund the specialist sensory equipment that is needed inside the rooms.
