Residents over 50 are being encouraged to get fit and active with an exercise programme designed just for them.
The special over 50s scheme has been organised by the Herts Sports Partnership, St Albans Arts, Sport & Health and the Saracens Sport Foundation.
A full list of weekly classes have been set up to provide the district’s more elderly residents with a friendly and fun environment in which they can get some exercise without feeling out of place.
All the exercise classes are run by qualified instructors and are provided at a low cost. The scheme has been funded by Hertfordshire County Council.
Dance classes are among the list of activities on offer and styles include anything from line dancing to Latin dancing. Participants do not need to have a partner and all newcomers are welcome.
Men’s fitness sessions are also being offered and these concentrate on co-ordination, flexibility and cardio vascular fitness.
A spokesman for the scheme said: “Men’s fitness sessions are a great way to get fit in a supportive environment with men of a similar age.
“Being physically active is of major importance to maintain and improve health. All adults are recommended to carry out at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity a day, and for some longer would be recommended.”
Venues offering classes include the London Colney Recreation Centre, in Perham Way and Alban Arena, in the city’s Civic Centre.
Other activities on the programme include golf, badminton, swimming, gym sessions, yoga and aerobics.
