Stockport is already one of the biggest towns in Britain, but have you ever thought about it being a city?
The area has a population of 280,000 and is well known for landmarks such as the Viaduct and attractions like the Hat Works, but it does not have a cathedral or a university. However, these are no longer requirements and any UK town can now apply to become a city.
The Stockport branch of Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce believes that the town really has a chance, and is campaigning for people to support the idea.
The president of the Stockport branch, Ben Poland said: “I believe that our exceptional town is well placed to compete for and win this valuable accolade – to become the Diamond city.”
He also has stated that the costs will be minimal, as all that is needed for the application is a few words explaining why Stockport should be a city, and a selection of photos of the town.
Stockport applied to be a city in 2002, but was beaten by Preston. Preston’s bid was based on their heritage, location, university and its position as the administrative centre of Lancashire.
Brighton and Hove won city status in 2000 and has two universities – but no cathedral.
Mr Poland believes that Stockport will be successful: “We already have a great range of assets. Our iconic buildings, innovative projects like the refurbishment of the Plaza, and our increasing recognition as a north west business hub.
“If we could get ourselves organised we could build up an 18-month campaign to demonstrate all that’s good in the borough and put ourselves in a position to win city status.
“This is about uniting and demonstrating all that we have to offer with the aim of benefiting everyone in the borough.”
