Stockport karate kids hope to go worldwide

Sisters Olivia and Leah Ferneyhough are hoping to pack a powerful punch or karate chop to be more accurate as they are set to compete with the best karate talent from around the world.

13 year old Leah and eight year old Olivia are two of the five members of the Bushido Martial Arts Association in Stockport who are hoping to take part in the world Karate championships in Canada in October.

The other three hopefuls are Brendan Sheffield, eight, from Bredbury, Jake Clegg, 12, from Heaton Norris and Jacob Haynes, 12, from Cheadle.

The karate enthusiasts are now looking for sponsors who will help to cover the £10,000 cost for their trip to Montreal.

Olivia and Leah’s mum Kay Ferneyhough, of Parry Mead, Woodley is saving for her own ticket as she wants to go to Canada to cheer on her daughters.

Kay said: “I am absolutely over the moon and think my daughters are superstars.

“I like the fact they have found something that keeps them occupied and helps with their school work as they are twice as confident now and karate teaches discipline.”

The five pupils hoping to go to Cananda will compete in the kata type of karate, which runs through techniques individually and sometimes with weapons rather than combat karate.

The fab five recently won nine medals between them at the British Championships. Leah, who has been competing for six years, has already won 14 British titles while her sister has won six in just three years.

The owner and master at Bushido, John Robertson, said: “Anyone who sponsored us would have their name on our kit and it is worth it to help promote sport in Stockport at its very best. To have so many talented youngsters at one club is a massive achievement.”
