Queen’s Birthday Honours List

People from all different walks of life throughout Coventry and Warwickshire have been named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Sportsmen and women, a born-again Christian, two tax workers, charity workers and one of the dentists in Coventry and Warwickshire are among the 18 people named on the list.

The awards feature MBEs, which are given for outstanding community service; OBEs recognising the people who play a distinguished role in any field, and also CBEs, which are given to those with a high profile role in regional affairs.

Among the Coventry and Warwickshire recipients is 70-year-old Gwen Daley, of Ernesford Grange.  Gwen becomes an MBE for services to the community.  A retired magistrate, Gwen runs the Excellence Academy, formerly known as the Coventry Black Boys Can, which is a supplementary school for youngsters aged nine to 16.

Gwen also works with a number of other charities and good causes, including Voluntary Action, the Barnabas Family Centre in Cromwell Street, Foleshill, and the Women’s Business Development Agency.

The Coventry golfer Phil Weaver has been made an OBE for services to sport; Andrew Jowett, former director of Warwick Arts Centre, has been made an OBE for services to music; Michael Boyd, the artistic director at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford, has been awarded a knighthood for his services to drama.

Also receiving OBEs are Bedworth-born show jumper Nick Skelton, for services to equestrian sport and Dr Nigel Carter, who is chief executive of the Rugby-based British Dental Health Foundation.

Rugby resident Kshama Shore, who is deputy head of debt management and banking at HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is also made an OBE, as too is Nicholas Tooby, who is senior manager of personal tax operations at HMRC, who lives in Nuneaton.

Getting an MBE is Warwickshire Special Constabulary chief officer Glyn Gardner who lives in Warwick. He gets his MBE for services to policing.

Glyn, who has served as a special for 42 years including ten as chief officer – which is equivalent to chief constable in the regular force – said: “I was very, very surprised and proud to hear that I’d been nominated.

“I’ve always wanted to help to keep the public safe and do my little bit for society.”
