Hundreds Walk In The Midnight Rain

Hundreds of people, dogs and pushchairs went out on the streets in the pouring rain at midnight to raise money for a hospice.

Around 900 people turned up at Huddersfield’s Galpharm Stadium for the fifth annual Midnight Memory Walk in aid of Kirkwood Hospice.

Organiser Jane Dutton said: “It was a brilliant night as usual. We could have done without the rain, it came down really heavily, but it didn’t deter us and it did dry up eventually.

“I was amazed that people came from all over the country for this event. They know about it or have heard about it or have experienced our services.

“The Midnight Memory Walk has now become a firm date in many people’s diaries, with growing numbers each year. This is a wonderful event with a unique atmosphere as every participant is walking in memory of a loved one.

“There is much laughter and a few tears as walkers tell us why they are walking, and this makes it an unforgettable night.”

Participants could walk a 10-mile route or a six-mile route. They gathered at the stadium during the evening and enjoyed an Alice in Wonderland show and two spectacular fire shows while they were waiting for the walks to start.

Hundreds of faces were painted and DJ Paul Clarke played tunes to the crowd as they warmed up with the help of fitness instructor Rosemary Conley.

Hospice mascot Duncan the Dragon cut the yellow ribbon and fired off a balloon release to launch the start of the walks.
