Choral Anniversary Hits The Right Note

Singers gave the audience a night to remember during a concert to mark the 175th anniversary of the Huddersfield Choral Society.

The concert took place at Huddersfield Town Hall and was the highlight of months of events to celebrate the society’s birthday.

The Choral’s Conductor Laureate Martyn Brabbins said: “Music performance is all about team work and we have a very strong team both on stage and back stage with the management of both groups and a line-up of soloists who I am very proud to be here making music with.”

He said to the audience: “You are also part of that team because listening is a very creative act.“You are a wonderful, loyal and generous audience. If you maintain your generosity of support there will be many more years of the Choral to come.“This performance is a birthday gift from us to you.”

Soloists Christine Rice, Peter Hoare and Christopher Purves were given great applause, followed by flowers and gifts. A group from Stratford-upon-Avon Choral Society, which is also celebrating its 175th anniversary this year, travelled to Huddersfield to join the celebrations.

Various events have been taking place to mark the Huddersfield Society’s anniversary, including workshops to encourage new singers and an exhibition showing the history of the society and local area. A Gala Ball at the Cedar Court Hotel was also held to celebrate the birthday.

The Huddersfield Choral Society Junior Choir is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a concert at the Town Hall in July.
