A new survey has concluded that Britons are having less sex than they were in the ‘90s – and our phones and tablets are getting the blame.
With social media becoming an increasingly popular bedtime pastime, this is being blamed as one of the reasons for our lack of interest in other nightly activities.
The huge survey was carried out by the National Surveys of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles (Natsal) and found that men had sex an average of 6.4 times a month in 1990-1991 compared to 4.9 times a month in 2010-2012. The figures for women were 6.1 times compared to 4.8 times. Are the figures for women just lower because they don’t brag as much?
Dr Cath Mercer, from University College London, told the BBC: “People are worried about their jobs, worried about money. They are not in the mood for sex.
“But we also think modern technologies are behind the trend too. People have tablets and smartphones and they are taking them into the bedroom, using Twitter and Facebook, answering emails.”
Other studies of our relationship with technology back up this theory, with Facebook being just one social media platform that reports a higher number of tablet users online during bedtime hours.
I wonder if the next James Bond movie will have him sitting in bed in the closing scene catching up with a few Tweets instead of, well, his usual antics!
Come on Britons, just slide your smartphone under the pillow for a few minutes and prove that the age of romance is not quite dead!
