How to prepare your home for a removal company

Everybody’s packing process is different, but it can’t be denied that whether you’re an unorganised packer or an expert stacker, a lot of work goes into boxing up your belongings.

Moving house can be difficult, but with the aid of a professional removals company, the process becomes a lot easier. That’s why Lloyds of Essex have broken down everything you need to know when preparing your home for a removals company, so you too can experience a pain-free move.

1. Plan Ahead

You should always plan ahead when moving house to prevent undue stress.

Create a checklist of your belongings and boxes. This will ensure you leave nothing behind, and give your movers an idea of what it is they’re packing.

You should also buy and prepare all of your packing supplies in advance so that you’re not caught out at the last minute. This includes stocking up on packing paper, boxes, bubble wrap and tape.

If the move is due to happen quickly, you may wish to take time off work to make sure everything is packed in time for the move. Doing everything at the last minute will only cause you and your removal company stress.

2. Remove Clutter in Advance

It’s no secret that moving house gives you the opportunity to sort through your possessions and remove clutter. By doing this well in advance and giving them to charity shops/throwing them away before the removal team gets there, you will massively speed up the process, and create valuable space in the moving van.

If you’re aiming for a mass overhaul of your belongings, then our tip would be to hire a skip, and ensure it’s been removed before your removal company is due to arrive.

3. Teamwork

If you are a family on the move, operating as an effective team will ensure that your packing is completed quickly and with minimal hassle.

You should also treat your removal company as part of your moving team. They are there to help you, so be clear about where your belongings are. Your removal team will likely know the most efficient order to pack your belongings into their van, so communicating about what’s in your boxes can help them move your stuff quicker.

4. Choose your Essentials

Your essentials box will include items like toiletries, a change of clothes, and fridge items, and will likely be the last things you pack and the first things you unpack. You might wish to keep these items separate from the boxes you hand over to your removal company and take them in your own car. This is so you know exactly where they are at all times.

We would recommend adding your kettle to the essentials list to keep yourself and your removal team motivated with cups of tea.

5. Label your Boxes

Organisation is the key to a swift and seamless move, and labelling your boxes with contents, as well as the room you want them to be in will make things much easier for yourself and your removal company. Labelling things as ‘fragile’ will make sure your movers are careful with the right boxes.

For an even smoother move, print out a floor plan and number the bedrooms so your movers are even more clear on where things should go.

6: Choose your Removal Company

Choosing your removal company well in advance is a good step to ensuring they are available for your moving date, and avoid a last minute panic.

Your removal company will give you guidance on what they are not allowed to move for you. These will include items such as cleaning supplies, motor oils and pets. Removals companies will also be able to offer extra services such as packing, storage, and cleaning of your property after the move.

Your removal company is there to make moving house straightforward and trouble-free, and Lloyds of Essex have been doing just that for over 40 years. Our removals service is designed to manage and organise your home or office move, to minimise stress and uncertainty.
