Sugar is the new evil

You could be forgiven for feeling slightly confused about what to eat these days.

For years we have been told to avoid fatty foods if we want to stay healthy, now we are being told that these low fat foods are potentially killing us with their sugar content.

Sugar is apparently the ‘new tobacco’ and should be avoided like the plague.

Health experts have announced that we need to cut the sugar content of our foods by at least 30 per cent if we want to avoid obesity and other serious health issues.

Simon Capewell, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Liverpool, says: “Sugar is the new tobacco. Everywhere, sugary drinks and junk foods are now pressed on unsuspecting parents and children by a cynical industry focussed on profit not health.

“The obesity epidemic is already generating a huge burden of disease and death.”

Foods that we may think are reasonably healthy choices, like tins of soup and vitamin water, have been exposed as sugar demons in disguise.

Am I the only one who feels like they are going round in circles? Do I need to religiously avoid sugar as well as fat, tobacco, alcohol, caffeine and salt, or instead of all these things?

What exactly am I suppose to eat? A lettuce leaf perhaps? Oh no, that doesn’t contain enough nutrients according to experts. What about an orange? Nope, too much citrus can encourage arthritis. A slice of wholemeal bread? Too salty. Shall I go on?

My head is spinning – maybe because I need something to eat…
