Tattoos in the news – again

Tattoos have been in the news a lot recently, what with footballers in the World Cup and various celebrities showing off their works of art.

You probably either love ‘em or hate ‘em and I’m not going to give my opinion on whether people should or shouldn’t have tattoos, but a story this week really did catch my eye.

There appears to be a new trend for having a company logo tattooed on your body. The phenomenon has been reported by the BBC, which looks at why more than 2,000 people have been tattooed with the logo of US gym chain Anytime Fitness.

The craze has even resulted in the company agreeing to reimburse the cost of the tattoo to anyone who has it done.

Mr Runyon, 45, of Anytime Fitness said customers were not getting the tattoo because it was free, adding: “Hundreds and hundreds of people have told us why they got the tattoo, and it has never been about the money or the brand.

“Instead the answers are always very, very personal. Many say they got the tattoo to mark the fact they had achieved something they never thought was possible, such as losing a considerable amount of weight, or feeling healthy.”

I’m trying to imagine being so passionate about a brand that I would want it imprinted on my body forever. There are many items out there that have changed my life (from hair removal devices and hair straighteners to anti wrinkle creams) but I’m not sure I would agree to have them etched on me – even for free!
