Forget the past – grow old like Floyd the clown

The world’s oldest clown Floyd ‘Creeky’ Creekmore has died at the age of 98.

This popular guy starting clowning around after he retired in the 1980s, in order to raise money for hospitals near his home in Billings, Montana.

What a great way to spend your retirement years! Most people just turn to golf, knitting or jigsaws to while away the hours in later life, but this character found a way to enjoy life with a smile, make others smile and do some good at the same time.

I’m determined to remember his story when I reach my retirement years.

On the subject of getting old, have you ever noticed how when you are still officially “young” things from the past are cringeworthy, but when you are officially “old” things from the past suddenly seem really cool and exciting. Try this test on yourself to see whether you are old or young – I dare you!

For example, there was a point in my life (probably in my 20s and early 30s) when absolutely EVERYTHING from the ‘80s just made me screw up my face in embarrassment or boredom – leg warmers, ra ra skirts, Pac Man and The A Team (I’m showing my age now). Now, however, these things are cool and interesting and make me speak with a fond tone of nostalgia (apart from shell suits!)

My daughter summed it up recently when she said: “Why is it that old people always talk about the past?” I’m not sure exactly what age this transformation takes place, but she is right, us oldies do spend a lot of time talking about the past.
