Have you ever had one of those painting mishaps? Like when you paint a tester patch on the wall, decide you don’t like it, and then struggle to cover it up with your new colour because it is so dark?
Well, if this has ever happened to you, you might sympathise with a similar problem that has occurred in Snowdonia – but on a much larger scale.
A ‘temporary’ poem was painted onto the lower slopes of Snowdon as part of The Gathering/Yr Helfa festival by the National Theatre of Wales last month.
The piece of artwork was due to be washed off but due to unusually hot weather, it became ‘cooked’ onto the rock face.
The Independent reported how the massive, 100ft poem is now angering locals after several attempts to clean it off have failed.
A spokeswoman for the theatre told the newspaper: “Unfortunately, despite detailed research, the removal of the poetry on the rock face is taking longer than anticipated. After the performance the vast majority of the paint was removed. Unfortunately despite our best efforts, the words remain visible.”
I realise this is a serious problem and hopefully the National Trust site will eventually be restored to its natural state, but I couldn’t help smile a little bit at the pure size of this unfortunate blunder.
So, let that be a lesson to you all you DIYers out there. Next time you are considering painting silly pictures over your walls because you are due to decorate, or you are thinking of letting the children write their names all over the surfaces before a coat of paint, make sure you are thoroughly sure it will not show afterwards!
