2015 has undoubtedly been a big year for the box office as blockbuster after blockbuster has hit our screens. Gone are the Orange Wednesdays that were loved by many but the pull of the cinema definitely hasn’t left. The selection of films released this summer indicate that this trend has no intention of slowing down as records are being smashed in film genres across the board.
For example, Jurassic World was released on June 11th and whilst dinosaurs may have taken over the park, the film seems to have had a similar impact on cinema. It has not only become the biggest film of 2015 but has beaten all box office sales in the UK since Skyfall in 2012. As it is only in its second week and still being shown in 604 cinemas, there is a high chance that it will finish its run here above the £60 million mark and in turn, make it on to the prestigious top 10 UK box office hits of all time. Whilst this may not be as impressive as a woman running away from a T-Rex in stilettos, it is still something you could perhaps brag about down the pub.
Secondly, the highly-anticipated Minions film has finally reached our screens. After the impressive performances of Despicable Me and its sequel, it seemed it was only a matter of time until the incoherent yet much-loved yellow minions became the stars of the show and with the addition of Sandra Bullock, could this film go wrong? Well, it seems not. The film has opened as the biggest UK debut weekend of any animated feature; it appears as though infinity and beyond isn’t as good as the sweet, sweet sound of £11.59 million.
As with the majority of summer holidays, the cinema doesn’t seem to be short of animated features. Although it isn’t out until the 24th of July in the UK, Pixar’s latest offering of Inside Out has opened to critical acclaim and rave reviews in the US. It currently holds an average scoring of 8.8 on IMDb and 98% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Furthermore, it has also started smashing records – its opening weekend’s gross profit is the highest for a Pixar original film (beating The Incredibles).
Although the weather may be too sporadic to predict, it appears this summer is going to be one of records for box office sales. Alongside Inside Out, future releases include Terminator: Genisys (2nd July); Magic Mike XXL (3rd July); Ant-Man (17th July) and Paper Towns (17th August).
