It has been a golden year for British sport and our success continued when tennis player Heather Watson broke into the WTA top 50 with her Japan Open title on Sunday.
Twenty-year-old Heather rose 21 places in the world rankings to 50th after becoming the first British woman to take a WTA singles title in 24 years. She replaced Laura Robson as the British number one. Congratulations Heather!
Sadly Andy Murray failed to make it a hat-trick of titles at the Shanghai Masters, losing a three-set thriller to Novak Djokovic. Djokovic saved five match points during the second set, going on to take the tie-break and breaking Murray twice in the third set.
Still, the British world number three has had a fabulous year and is looking good for future titles.
Things are certainly looking up for British tennis: not before time mind you. Next year should be interesting: fingers crossed for Wimbledon 2013. It could well be the year. Here’s hoping.
