Cold spell causes chaos – again

The UK is surprised by its winter weather again!  Low temperatures across the country and snow in Scotland have sent us all into a state of apoplexy.

I really think we should be getting used to the UK’s cold weather by now.

The BBC reported that dozens of schools had shut in the north east today, Tuesday March 19, as well as more than 30 in Scotland.

Snow is really not that unusual in this country, particularly in the north, so why have we not found a way of coping with it by now?

Forecaster Matt Dobson said in The Independent: “It’s not unusual for it to snow in March, in fact we are far more likely to see snow at Easter than at Christmas.

“What is unusual for March is how persistent the cold weather and snow is.”

That word unusual seems to crop up every year. If the weather is so unusual every year, what on earth is “usual” weather for this time of year?

The Telegraph reported that the cold spell was causing a “significant health risk” in the north of the UK.

The NHS issued advice, telling people to put more clothes on to keep warm and have hot drinks and hot meals.

Meanwhile, drivers were being warned to take care on the roads and allow extra time for journeys.

Have we lost so much common sense these days that we really need to be told how to drive and keep warm every time the temperature drops? The answer is probably yes. Every time there is a bit of heavy rain where I live the roads grind to a halt because drivers have tried to ignore the conditions and ended up ploughing into each other.
