Waterfront Quarter Moves A Step Closer
Huddersfield hopes to be flooded with new jobs after its major waterfront development took a major step forward.
Preparation work is due to start on the Waterfront Quarter scheme after Kirklees Council awarded a contract for the landscaping of the site.
The land has planning permission for four new buildings, which will contain offices, shops, restaurants and bars. The land will be offered to developers when it is ready, creating hundreds of new jobs in the town.
The landscaping contract has been awarded to Clugston Construction Ltd. It is hoped the three-acre site will be ready for commercial development in 2012.
Cllr Peter McBride, lead cabinet member for regeneration at Kirklees Council, said: “With work starting on the next phase of development, I am delighted to see that Huddersfield’s Waterfront Quarter is gaining considerable momentum.
“Construction of the new Kirklees College campus is right on schedule, with students expected to move in next year. And, as work on the site has progressed, it’s now easy to see how attractive the waterside location will be to other investors and developers.
“Huddersfield’s emerging Waterfront Quarter is transforming a previously neglected and much-underrated part of the town.
“The influx of students, offices, shops, bars and restaurants – all located together in such an attractive setting – will create new jobs and breathe new life into this part of our town. This is great news for local people.”
The regeneration, funded jointly by Kirklees Council and regional development agency Yorkshire Forward, will include a new lock, landing stage, and passing place.
A towpath for pedestrians and cyclists will be formed between Chapel Hill and Manchester Road at Longroyd Bridge and the final stage will be the creation of residential apartments.
